Health Care Reform Is Needed. Vote Down Obama Health Care But Keep The Debate Alive!

Can anyone say that the Health Care System In America is just fine? Can anyone say it doesn’t need improvements? If you answer yes to the first question and no to the second question then answer this question. Is it alright to have millions of Seniors uninsured, millions of average American uninsured and worst of all millions of children uninsured?

Greed is the primary force behind this recession we are in. From the beginning of this country there has been a moral compass base of general Christian values. Those values do not include greed.

When Congress signed the Declaration of Independence, July 4th 1776 they included the famous phrase

...”that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

We enact laws to protect people from murder, assault, rape etc. These laws protect some, granted they are not perfect nor is any government run plan perfect. But the Federal and State laws try to protect “life”.

Thanks to the miserable Obama health care reform, the debate has brought up more ideas the thought than anytime before. When Hillary’s health care reform made it to the fore ground it was stop dead in its tracks. Now at least we have big discussion going on.

I am NOT in favor of Obama’s health care reforms. But I do think that something needs to be done about health care. And Greed needs to be removed from health care reform. We need to care more for the uninsured than the executives and lobbyist making tons of money.

The government regulates many different aspects of our daily life. There are over sight committees and regulatory commissions. The most obvious one and the ones I like to compare Health care to is public Utilities like the one that provide power for our AC in the summer and heat in the winter. The one that provide light in our homes. These utilities are deemed critically important and a basic essential need that they are regulated by the Federal government.

Even this system isn’t perfect, many of our Seniors die from heat waves in the summer and from the cold in the winter but the regulation works for the most part. The executives of these Utilities make excellent wages, there is no shortage of people who want to work for these Utilities. These Utilities are engaged in R&D for more efficient methods.

Why can’t we simplify the health care problems by regulating the Health Insurance companies and the Pharmaceutical companies so that all Americans are insured and the proper drugs are made available to those who need them. Isn’t health care as important to “Life, liberty and the pursuits of happiness as making laws to try and protect us from those who would seek to hurt us?

The Republicans need to stop pandering to the big money lobbyists and the Democrats need to stop trying to socialize everything.

The solution is simple and the government has many regulatory and oversight laws in place. It seems that regulating the health care industry would reasonably easy.

There are thousands of things the government can do right now to drastically reduce the costs of healthcare, such as eliminating the FDA and rescinding the government backing of the AMA. Those steps alone would probably reduce costs by 80-90% in the long run.

I didn’t know the government funded the AMA. I wonder if we could use that to our advantage by forcingthem to do thing my patient friendly? Actually I think I’m inclined to withdraw funding like you suggested. Why would an organization flush with rich people need government funding? Take it away! Although I like the FDA for it’s regulations on drugs. I don’t trust the Pharmicuticals. They could put unsafe, untested drugs out there that could cause more harm than good. An overhaul maybe in order but not elimination.

preventative medicine is hugely emphasized in countries with nationalised health care. In the UK we have well supported anti-smoking campaigns with NSH supported groups and phone lines, healthy eating advice is advertised on kids TV (the "five a day" fruit and veg campaign) and vaccines are free and readily available. We also don't advertise prescription drugs on TV

Correct me if I’m wrong. In Socialized health care I’ve heard and read stories where people are waiting in a queue to get surgery? If they need heart surgery they may have to wait three months?

I’ve also heard that the doctors and government determine how much health care you get or don’t get?

If you want to fix the problem with healthcare in America you have to fix the problem with lawsuits.

A doctor will order 10 times more test then you need to make sure they do not get sued. 10 times more test make your bill 10 times higher then it needs to be.

While I have never sued a doctor or hospital and I’ve had three or four chances to do so...One instance was a misdiagnosis of a tumor in my wife who three weeks later had emergency surgery to remove a bowl bloackage which was a huge tumor and she went through a year of Chemotherapy. The Radiologist said give her an enema and she’ll be fine. We could have won a law suit easily but we didn’t sue. If all doctors were as good as our surgeon and Oncologist then we wouldn’t need to sue doctors. They earn huge amounts of money and we expect perfection from them when we trust our health and lives to their care they are held to a higher standard.

I don’t know what the answer is and I know law suits in all aspects of life are promblematic I just don’t feel like we can take that system of checks and balances away from the consumer or patient. But it does interfere with health care costs. And it is a valid point in the debate on health care reform. Maybe if we promote govenment regulation in insurance and drug makers we might have to consider regulating law suits to some degree.

One thing I forgot to add to by original blog entry was about keeping the debate going. As it looks right now the Obama plan will likely fail. I hope it does but my fear is that the heated debate and exchange of ideas will stop when the plan is defeated. Hillary’s plan was defeated and until now we have not had as meaningful debate on the subject. It’s worth deabting until we get a good plan in place. We need health care reform in a bad way. We need it sooner not later but it needs to be wise.
